Social media in Gender Based Violence
Advantages
1.End silence of victims
There are organisations established enabling victims of Gender Based violence to speak up such as the Silent Rights which fights against domestic violence as well. This organisation has a newsletter , a blog and Facebook page where all women can freely come to light ,support each other and be united to fight against abuse .https://www.silentrights.co.za
Social media has been an effective tool to create awareness ,help victims and find solutions for those affected. Victims speak up and raise their voices on social media without fear.2.The exit is possible
Social media is there to connect people. The human traffickers use online platform to advertise ,sign up and abuse the victims while they forget that victims are active on social media during the ill treatment. The victims use social media to ask for help and ways to escape. Once the victims sends the location , it is over for the human traffickers. https://polarisproject.org/blog/2019/02/surviving-with-social-media-how-victims-and-survivors-use-social-media-to-stay-safe
Disadvantage
1.Priority for abuse
Social media is used to hate and discriminate others. It further contributes to online-gender -based violence namely stalking, hacking and cyber bullying of women by the males who are meant to protect them .https://www.premiumtimesng.com/news/headlines/544957-analysis-social-media-can-change-actions-that-drive-gender-based-violence

RECOMMENDATION
As a Public Relations Practitioner , I think social media must be refrained from allowing negative comments and threats in order for all active individuals to feel safe and supported.

Well spoken. We all need to come together to fight and put a stop to gender-based violence. Although the use of social media can be a disadvantage, but it is still an opportunity for us to speak and offer support to those in need and to also educate many people, male and female, about such issues.
ReplyDeleteSocial media can be a disadvantage but most of people use social media as their way to speak up
DeleteVery informative post regardless of fear as PRP we can be targeted when speaking on this issues we still need to come together because it’s our job to make our voices to be heard for better
ReplyDeleteThat's true,it's either we speak or we are kept silent for the rest of our lives
DeleteWe living in the fear now. On your recommendations you said social media must be refrained for allowing negative comments I think that is impossible. Although it is making the PRP'S JODTO BE HARD.
ReplyDeleteIt is impossible but owners of social media can try put a stop to this
DeleteWe live in a society where abuse is normalized , I feel like people need to be more educated about GBV and how it affects people.
ReplyDeleteYes,even the younger ones must be taught about abuse so that when they grow up,they would not attempt to abuse their partners or loved ones
DeleteSocial media really helped with raising awareness for GBV...This blog is so informative
ReplyDeleteEven Celebrities do come out to cry on social media
DeleteSocial media really plays a big role with helping spread awareness about GBV however it can't control people on what not to say, people just have to do their research before believing everything they see on social media to get factual information
ReplyDeleteI get you and research can make one understand the consequences of being abused
DeleteThis is a good piece of work, well stated and clear
ReplyDeleteThanks for sharing this information. Social Media have played an important role on fighting against #GBV. Victims should break the silence.
ReplyDeleteTime for silence is up, shout, cry and be heard, it's enough!
DeleteYou right people should break the silence, love you work
ReplyDeleteOoh thank you so much. If people could all do so,this abuse can be minimized.
DeleteThat’s true social media play a vital role , or help victim to come foward
